Coyote spotted on Edsel Drive today

I wish I could say it was an Urban Cowboy I saw today, but our Gilley's has been closed for years and doesn't John Travolta sleep during the day? Anyway, it was an urban coyote ...

At about 12:30 p.m. today, I spotted what appeared to be a coyote walking northwest on Edsel Drive toward the Cumberland River. I followed the animal in my car until it stopped in front of Rock Harbor Marina on Basswood Avenue.

Other recent coyote sightings in the area have been discussed on the Hillwood Neighborhood Listserv (membership required to view posted messages), and the Charlotte Park Neighborhood Association has emailed much of that information to neighbors to update them on the coyotes in nearby Hillwood.

The Metro Animal Care and Control website refers readers to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency's website for information on coyotes. There, readers can scroll down to see a pdf publication link for "Controlling Coyotes in Tennessee" and, what I found most helpful, a link to information on Dealing with Urban Coyotes.

Most notably, the TWRA site says coyote attacks are "extremely rare," and "in recorded history only 30 coyote attacks on humans have been recorded." The site also lists more than a dozen tips for dealing with urban coyotes, and "do not feed coyotes" tops the list. Click here to see the TWRA page on Dealing with Urban Coyotes for more information.

That looks pretty large (and well-fed) for an urban coyote. I'll keep an eye out, though. I live right in the area.

I KNOW that I spotted one now! I live right on the perimeter of Charlotte park, and we have a street light (a rather bright one, I might add) in the back of the property. About a month ago, I let my dog out at around 2-3 am and I know I saw that Coyote standing under the street light. It ran off, but still...I don't want that thing just wandering around! I grew up in the country and have seen many of these animals but when I saw the "urban coyote" I just thought I was going a bit crazy!

Several months ago my husband and I both spotted a coyote, on different occasions, in the West Park neighborhood on Charlotte Pike. Thanks for keeping everyone up to date.

Coyotes have been seen around Belmont Blvd., in the past. In fact, a neighbors cat and mine have just disappeared and I am so hearbroken because I suspect it's the coyotes again.

A few years ago, I had 4 of them in my yard chasing my cats which made me put up a fence in the backyard. I've seen them in Green Hills too.

Hi Paige! It's your neighbor Angie from across the street. Thanks for this blog! I meant to sign my name above.

Editor's note: A recent comment was removed and is re-posted below. Sgt. Connie Tripp at the West Police Precinct confirmed by phone today that it is illegal to fire a weapon inside Nashville city limits. However, it is legal to shoot coyotes elsewhere.

Original comment from anonymous reader:

"You do know it's LEGAL to shoot these things..? Pop 'em and throw 'em in the river or a dumpster.."

Would really like any photos of coyotes in the Nashville area for our site.. www.nashvillecoyotes.com.

This is a non profit, all volunteer site dedicated to coyote awareness for Nashvillians.
